How to Find Your Suit of Armor
Sometimes we all need that crucial piece of clothing. The jacket that makes you feel invincible, the jeans that make your booty sing. Whatever it is for you, we all want that one thing that makes us feel like we can take on the world.
The day I found my suit of armor, I felt unstoppable. I felt like I could do anything, and most of all, I finally felt cool.
For me, it was a leather jacket. I had always wanted one, but I could never find one that fit right, one that made me feel like I belonged in it, and it belonged on me. The fact is, I couldn’t find one that didn’t wear me. Then, one day, I walked into the right door. It was a place that another me would have been afraid to walk into. I just wouldn’t have felt cool enough or tough enough. But somehow, I walked in that door, and the me that walked out of that door never felt afraid of going anywhere ever again.
What’s Your Secret Weapon?
There’s something you’ve always wanted, but maybe you thought, “I can’t pull it off.” Maybe you thought it was for someone who was more this or more that. I’m here to tell you it’s for the you that you’ve been looking for.
There’s something magical about accepting that you are as great as you want to be. I always wanted to be cool enough to wear a leather jacket, I always wanted to be cool enough to wear plaid pants, and I was always afraid that someone would look at me and think I was trying to be someone I wasn’t. But to quote Luke Wilson, “What if you’re trying to be something that you are?”
Find that thing that makes you feel invincible, and take the risk, you deserve it! You deserve to look in the mirror and say, “This is who the *F* I am, and I love it!” Confidence looks good on you, my friend. How do I know? Cause I’ve yet to know a beautiful angel such as yourself who doesn’t look good with a little extra “I got this” in your pocket.
It took me a long time to look in the mirror and say, “I love you.” But now, I wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the biggest steps on the road to getting there? It was the jacket. The symbol of badassery that would not quit and could not be mistaken. Find your secret weapon and show the world you’re not afraid to be who the heck you are.
Material Girl
We are certainly living in the material world, and sometimes yes, I can be a material girl. I know that the secret to loving yourself doesn’t come from a store… but I also know that there’s nothing wrong with that little boost of confidence you get when you’re wearing your suit of armor. In fact, I would say there’s everything right with it.
When you look good, you feel good, and that’s just a fact. When I found my jacket, I didn’t put it on for anyone else. I put it on for me. As silly as it may sound, that jacket made me who I am today. It gave me the confidence to try something new. To walk into new places and to create new things.
Find that thing that makes you feel strong and safe and ready to take a risk. I’ve known a pint of ice cream and a rom-com to heal my heartbreak, and I’ve known a few well-placed wearables that let me open the door to a new life and walk through it.
Sometimes you gotta pull a power move, and sometimes you’ve got to wear that power move. Find your signature color, find the tee shirt you never want to take off, find it, and wear it until it falls apart. I’m willing to bet that by the time it does, you won’t need it anymore.
Take a Chance on You
With a little confidence, there’s very little you can’t do. I know there are times when we all feel like we need that little boost of self-esteem, that little push in the right direction. Why not give it to yourself?
The only thing that can hold you back from being the person you want to see when you look in the mirror is you. It took me a long time to figure that out, but once I gained that confidence, once I told myself it was ok to be me and that I was cool, it turned out there was almost nothing I couldn’t do.
We’re all a bunch of works in progress. Nothing is stopping you from taking the next big leap. Don’t be afraid to look in the mirror and tell yourself, “You’ve got this!” Because you so do.
Life is about living, and doing that is a whole lot easier when you can love yourself for who you are.
For me, it all started when I found my suit of armor. I learned that it was ok to be alone, that I was funny, that I could move halfway across the country, that I could do standup comedy, and that I was good enough to be in a band, even though I’m terrible at playing bass. I learned that I could fall in love and out of love and then in the real kind of love that lasts forever. And through it all, I could love myself. It all started when I put on that jacket.
All I want for you is to realize that you can do this. You can be everything you ever wanted to be because you already are! You’re a beautiful angel in a Victoria’s Secret fashion show, and you are unstoppable. Above all else, never forget that you are magic, and you don’t need glitter to shine.
Sometimes you just need a little armor to get you started.
